Moving to Estonia

May 6th, 2008

For at least the next 6 months, I’ll be based in Estonia.

I’m going to be writing - mainly about technology - from Tallinn, the tiny country’s capital. Keep an eye on Rational Geekery for how I get on. If anyone is in the market for a technology freelancer, based in the Baltic, then drop me a line.

I’ll also be doing some English tutoring while I’m there. Wish me luck!

Rational Geekery - new theme

March 10th, 2008

I have updated the theme on Rational Geekery (ratgeek.com), with a view to ramping up the level of posting on the blog. I think the design had been taking the wind out the project, as I wasn’t be comfortable with it. The new theme is fresh and I’m really into it.

Hoping to push on the project and concentrate more time on tech writing.

CSS email

September 25th, 2007

I managed to pull off some excellent CSS embedding for my emails. Easy enough on Outlook, a bit more tricky on Apple’s Mail App.

Voice Recording

August 22nd, 2007

I was in the market for a new voice-recording tool - a Dictaphone or whatever. My ageing Sony micro-cassette recorder is over the hill and was making me look a bit old hat in client interviews. I always need a reliable and clear record of interviews, so that I can go back over the chat when I’m writing the copy.

I started looking at flash-memory options from Sony and Olympus and - having been rather put off by their price - began wondering about recording tools for my 30GB iPod. I knew I had heard add-ons were available, and having looked at a few reviews online, I plucked for the MicroMemo from XtremeMac - which also has a built in microphone. I managed to find one for £30 (inc VAT).

Just had a play and I’m delighted. The definition is fantastic and it really couldn’t be easier to use. It also syncs brilliantly with iTunes, which means I can catalogue and save my audios easily. I’ll report back if I have any complications after some serious use.

at last…

…a wall hanging I can appreciate.
